Jordan, with its ancient wonders, desert landscapes, and rich culture, is becoming an increasingly popular destination for travelers seeking meaningful, eco-friendly experiences. As tourism grows, so does the importance of preserving the country’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.

If you’re planning a trip to Jordan and want to travel more responsibly, here are some ways you can minimize your impact and support sustainable tourism.

Stay at Eco-Friendly Accommodations

Jordan offers a range of eco-lodges and sustainable stays that prioritize the environment and local communities.

  • Feynan Ecolodge in Dana Biosphere Reserve is a shining example, using solar power, zero plastic, and supporting the local Bedouin community.

  • In Wadi Rum, choose camps that follow Leave No Trace principles and use renewable energy sources.

Look for accommodations with certifications or practices that support conservation, water efficiency, and local employment.

Support Local Communities

Buy handmade crafts, textiles, and souvenirs directly from artisans in towns like Madaba, Salt, and Petra. Choose locally owned restaurants, tour operators, and guides to ensure your money supports Jordanian families rather than international chains.

Tip: Visit cooperatives like the Jordan River Foundation and Beit Khairat Souf, which empower women and preserve heritage.

Travel Slow & Light

Instead of rushing from Petra to Wadi Rum in a day, take your time. Consider hiking routes like:

  • The Jordan Trail – a 675 km hiking route through 75 villages and historic sites.

  • The Dana to Petra trek, one of the most scenic multi-day hikes in the Middle East.

Walking or using shared transportation reduces your carbon footprint while allowing you to connect more deeply with the land and people.

Minimize Waste

Bring a reusable water bottle (with a filter), tote bag, and avoid single-use plastics. Jordan is a dry country, so water conservation is also crucial—shorter showers and mindful use go a long way.

Some eco-conscious hotels now offer filtered water refills, and local initiatives like Eco Hikers are working on environmental awareness and cleanup projects.

Respect Local Culture and Nature

Responsible travel also means being a respectful guest:

  • Dress modestly, especially in rural areas and religious sites.

  • Don’t climb on archaeological ruins or take anything from nature reserves.

  • Ask for permission before photographing people.

Being mindful helps preserve Jordan’s culture and fosters positive connections with locals.

Final Thoughts

Sustainable travel in Jordan isn’t just possible—it’s rewarding. By making thoughtful choices, you can experience Jordan’s magic while helping to protect it for future generations. Whether it’s sipping tea in a Bedouin tent, hiking through ancient canyons, or floating in the Dead Sea, you’ll be part of a story that’s as meaningful as it is unforgettable.

And if you’d like to try a sustainable tour in Jordan, we’d love to welcome you at Zaman Tours. We work closely with local communities, eco-friendly accommodations, and experienced guides to help you travel deeper—and leave a positive impact.

A personal dream Awesome adventure!! I enjoyed every second. Visiting Petra, riding in the desert at Wadi Rum, sleeping under the open sky if wanted, enjoying breathtaking views every day... and all this with wonderful and well-cared-for Arabian horses. I was lucky and got many tips for handling Arabian horses from the owner, Hashem Farajat. Afterwards, a relaxing visit of the Dead Sea. Everything was perfectly organized by the Amman office and on-site personnel. 100% recommendation!!
